Abstract

The concept of cotermineity leads to conceptual (subject) surrogation that matches the document against the most relevant sector of the classification, and focuses it there as closely as possible. These ideas have as much place in normal (author/title) surrogation, despite the Canons of Ascertainability and of Permanence (Ranganathan). Alphabetical cataloguing is (or can be) as systematic as classified cataloguing, but only if such a principle as coter‐mineity is given sway there. Nominal surrogation is not best distinguished from analytical bibliography by such Canons, since these latter lean too much on transcription and too little on systematization, and since they assume that nominal surrogation deals with books rather than works.

Abstract

IThe activity of the group has continued to progress with great energy and enthusiasm for practical applications of the theoretical ideas and schemes of the members, many of whom have acted as consultants to private, government and international institutions. Some of the longer‐serving members retired, but continued to attend meetings. The Group heard with great regret of the death of Mr B. I. Palmer, its Founder Chairman. An important element in the discussions from its beginning was the theoretical scheme of S. R. Ranganathan, and this was largely due to Palmer, who had returned from war service in India fired with enthusiasm for Ranganathan's ideas, and determined to interest others in developing and applying them. His collaboration with Mr A. J. Wells, another founder member, had as an early result their little monograph, The fundamentals of library classification, which has greatly influenced both teaching and practice of classification, and not only in Britain.

Abstract

THE Wanstead Library is just round the corner from the shopping centre in the High Street where the old shop branch existed for many years. The new Library is a large, single‐storey structure with floor to ceiling windows facing Christchurch Green, a charming open space with well established trees. This spacious, attractive building is in complete contrast to the cramped accommodation previously occupied and local reaction has been emphatically favourable.

Abstract

Universal Decimal Classification—dying duck or live bird?—or some such title—was suggested to me, but this is highly debatable, and there will hardly be time for the duck‐shooters to develop a concerted onslaught in the half‐hour or so allowed us for discussion. Besides, I hope to be able to convince you—if the BSI's fine efforts have not already done so—that the UDC is by no means the dying duck—certainly not the dead duck—that some of its severest critics seem to imagine. Perhaps the bird has ceased to soar as it once did in the times of Otlet, La Fontaine, Bradford and Donker Duyvis, but that it is still viable in the turbulent air of current documentation may be gauged from a recent FID inquiry aimed at obtaining figures for the distribution of UDC editions and an approximate estimate of the number of users throughout the world.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose is to map and discuss two schools of thought in knowledge organization research. The objective of this mapping is to examine the conceptual views and the derived questions and concerns voiced in these two schools and whether they fit with concerns in contemporary digital culture.

Design/methodology/approach

The approach is a comparative analysis and discussion.

Findings

The comparative analysis and discussion point out the different sets of questions the two schools are concerned with distinct epistemological and ontological implications.

Originality/value

The originality of this article is the naming, mapping and discussion of two schools of research in knowledge with a view to how they fit with problems of ordering, archiving and searching in digital culture.

Abstract

This was compiled as a special report by Edwin Castagna, president of the ALA, 1964–5, and a one‐day workshop on the findings was presented in Detroit. It is a ‘first effort’ to assess what is needed in dollars to bring the national level of library service up to the standards set by ALA divisions in the areas of stock, professional staff, and operating expenditures. Six thousand dollars was used as an average beginning salary for new librarians. The coverage is restricted to school libraries, academic libraries, and public libraries. The state of graduate library education is also shown. Some conclusions drawn from the findings included the need for re‐examination and re‐evaluation of the standards of various types of libraries: the need to gather more uniform statistics and clearer definitions of roles and responsibilities. Tables are given, including details of expenditure grouped by state, and also a breakdown of the stock and numbers of professional staff with comparison against required standards.
